Title: Obutto
Post by: Wiz on February 06, 2012, 04:43:35 PM
I know there are a few of you here that have an Obutto.  I think there may even be some pictures floating around here somewhere.

A couple questions for those that have one...

Is it sturdy?  I'm pretty hard on my wheel and pedals.

Do you have the tabletop accessory?  If so, does it swing from the side to the front? or is it stationary?

Are there multiple mounting options for both wheel and pedals?  I ask because I have a Fanatec CSR & CSR Elite pedals and I can't find any info on whether or not they are compatible with an Obutto.

Any other relevant info you think I should know?

I recently cashed in some unused vacation days so I have a nice spare chunk of change and am thinking about getting one.

Thanks!

It is sturdy (as long as you have everything screwed in tight)... I've wiggled some nuts loose on mine (they were only ever hand-tightened) but just re-tighten them and it's fine. Everything is welded metal and the bottom is smooth (except the tray, see below). Unless you're like kicking it and throwing it at things, it should hold up to your brute force.

The tabletop swings in (on mine from the left). I sit close to the wheel so it won't swing in front of me while I'm in the chair, but it goes to like a 45 degree angle from me. It'll swing in front of the chair when I'm not in it. I use it to hold shit (remotes, controllers, bluetooth headset). I don't put my laptop on it because I don't trust it (I move when I race... you know, leaning into corners... and I don't want it to tip).

The model Obutto I have has one place for the wheel and the pedals sit on the tray on the ground (which is adjustable for bank angle and possibly reach). The wheel can be moved up and down (it's on an angle so moving it up moves it toward you and down away from you).

The seat slides forward and backward and reclines (you're from Michigan, no? If you need to be in full "Detroit Lean" mode you definitely can). The pedal tray grips the pedals really well... they've never budged since I've put them on there over 2 years ago. I don't use the TV stand that attaches to the front (I use the empty pole spot to wrap my excess wires around). The only modification I've made is I slid an old piece of wood baseboard under the pedal tray so I can slide the whole rig across the carpet without the edge of the tray catching anything. I just kick it out when I drive so everything sits in place.

The shifter and tabletop can switch sides and you can mount it farther forward or rearward with regards to the seat. I'm sure some people would like the shifter to go farther forward but I like it where it's at.

Umm... I love it. I will be moving in the coming months (don't know where to yet) and I realized that if I move farther away, I will be taking less things. I've been trying to figure out in my mind what I will have to leave behind so this rig will fit in my car.  :)

I won't drag out that altered picture with the God awful Red Wing jerseys replacing my B's.   (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif)

I love mine.

It is very study.  No motion.

I have the keyboard tray/desk top.  It came with it.  It swivels.  It can mount on either side.  This is the only thing that may shake a little during game play.  It is nice to have this.

The wheel mount is basically a metal plate welded onto two rails that slide up and in (towards you) or out and down.(away from you) Perfect for getting the wheel the proper height and distance from your seating position.  It uses the wheels own clamping system to hold onto it.

The foot tray is adjustable to a point.  It has 3 mounting positions that raise the tray about an inch.  Its a nice size foot tray.  It fits my G27 pedals with room to spare on each side and front and back.  My pedals measure about 12" at its widest point and 17" long (toe to heel).   I don't know how your pedals look so I don't know if that helps you or not.

It also can with the gated shifter mount.  It's rarely used.  Looks cool for the guests that come over though. :D

The seat is really comfy.  Hours can be spent in it at a time.  If you tire, it fully reclines so you can nap.

I'll see if I can find photo's of the pedal tray I took for another friend of mine.  Those might help you out.

So, what can I do to get you to drive home one of these Obutto's tonight. :laugh

I'm sure you can drill the plate for the wheel because the clamping system on the CSR is god awful.

Ah, I understand now.  After reading this and doing a little more reading elsewhere, I see now that the tabletop accessory is in addition to the keyboard/mouse tray.  I was originally under the impression that this tabletop accessory was the keyboard/mouse tray.

Thanks guys.  Your respnses were extremely helpful.

One more question...  how was it delivered?  I read they weigh about 100ish pounds.  Does it come on a pallet?  Will I need to be home to help the delivery person get it off the truck?

Probably

My UPS guy was not amused by the giant box. I think it literally shipped from China to Texas and they shipped it to me without opening it. But yeah I had to help lug it inside. No pallet for me.

It comes in a big box.  No pallet.   I did not help the UPS guy.  They get paid to snap their backs, I don't.  I helped him slide it in the front door ^-^

I don't know if you need to be home, I just happened to be home.

Mine shipped from Olympia, WA.  I got it 2 days after payment went through.

You're going to be very happy with it.  Before I bought mine, I had a DF GT and DF Pro hooked up to my coffee table up in the mancave.  If I was feeling good, I could race for about 30 minutes before I had to stand up and walk around.  Now I can easy go for hours.

A month ago, I ran back to back two hour stints without a break.  I actually find myself sitting in the Obutto more than my recliner.

Chris from Obutto (the owner) is really cool.  I contacted him about getting one back when he was having trouble with his TX distributor that was screwing folks over and inadvertently giving Chris and Obutto a bad name.  Chris had me an Obutto two days after we talked and I gave him my credit card info...

If only I was so efficient...

That was well over a year ago and it's still only half put together up in my mancave.  (I use it for magazine storage.  They're stacked all over it.  Yeah I have the whole deal - including the desk table addition, which BTW is kind of a waste...)

Now that we have G27 support I should probably get off my lazy ass and get it put together.  I use my Bob Earl for racing and my other PS3 (rocker chair w/DS3) for drifting.  But I am getting too fucking old (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/oldfart.gif) to be climbing into and out of Bob's VRC.  (The only design flaw with the VRC is that it sits on the ground.  If it was 12 inches higher it wouldn't be such a chore getting in and out of it...  I should probably have built one myself -- but I am a software guy.  I'm not as comfortable working with hardware...)

My mancave is in a high state of disarray; if I ever get it cleaned I will snap some pics.  It really a cool FUCKING place - upstairs and only accessible thru a stairway from the master bedroom on the 1th floor.  It has a shelf around the top of the wall (crown molding dropped down and a shelf supporting it instead of the ceiling.)  It has all kinds of "collector" stuff displayed including my collection of skulls and nekkid ceramic women.

There are Coop posters (mostly devil girls) and other erotic artwork I've collected adoring the walls.  (http://i.imgur.com/mOhyf.gif)

My (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/brodkavelarg.gif) lovely wife hates the place...

(http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/I_Dunno.gif) Maybe if someone came to visit, it would give me and excuse to clean the place up a bit.  Right now let's just say it's a bit cluttered...

Bet my (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/brodkavelarg.gif) lovely wife would say that's a FUCKING understatement...

Ah, yes, the Obutto....had one for a couple of years.. FatLeadFoot and I ordered ours at the same time....Yes, there was an expensive shipping cost, and yes, they weigh in around 100 lbs.  BUT......Listen to this:

I have never had a bad back or sore legs from sitting in this racing seat for over 8, 9, 10 hours at a time.   :o

Well, there goes the neighborhood. None of us will be able to beat his ass now....there'll be no end to Wizard's glee for the next month at least.

Wiz:

Start a new thread, "How I like my Obutto and why"  :D (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif)

Glad it finally arrived. You'll have more than a month's worth of real pleasure out of it....I still LOVE mine.  Welcome to the Obutto Fan Club. :D

Wizard,

Did you take the day off and are parked at the front door listening for any sound that could be a cube van?

The tension must be killing you.  (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/lol1.gif)

I would have definitely been running a temp and throwing up if it was coming to my house  :)

That's O.K., I get a temp and throw up every time I hear you're coming NEAR my house, (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/lol1.gif)
You want some old man? (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/lol1.gif)

Oh, Yeah, bring it on Chunky!  If yer comin' to my place, make sure yer packin' iron.   :laugh

The M6 bolts came with the wheel.  I just had to spend about 30 minutes or so last night trying to find them.  (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/lol1.gif)

Maybe with my excitement opening my wheel I lost mine, never knew they were included. I had to buy some more  (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif). Luckily we live in the land of metric.

Enjoy the rig, I love mine.

The clamping system on my Fanatec CSR wheel sucks ass so I'm going to drill some holes in the wheel plate on my Obutto and hard mount the wheel.
The Thrusmaster clamp was the worst I have ever seen as well. I hard mounted it on the second day. Great wheel but they cut corners on a couple things.

Yeah?  How is that monster??? Awesome I imagine!

After a brief discussion online the other day with jaej, I started to wonder how every one else drives.  He bounces back and forth between controller and wheel, which personally I think will hinder your ability to get used to the wheel.  I know there's a ton of people here that are amazing on both, but once getting used to the wheel since day 1, I'm freaking HORRIBLE on the controller.  Yet I do remember going from controller to wheel, I couldn't touch the times I used to get on the controller the first few months with a wheel.

Anyway I'm getting sidetracked.  Basically I think half of the battle with using the wheel is having a nice comfortable stable setup for it, otherwise it's more of a pain than it's worth.  So aside from all you Obutto owners, how else does everyone with a wheel drive?  I made this custom rig based off several internet plans I came across, and for me it's perfect, and was super cheap for  DIY project using only hand tools and a dremel to drill starter holes.  It was originally designed around a massage chair I had, but when it's not massaging that thing has 0 lower back support, and I wound up confined to bed for a day after a few long racing sessions.  Now I use what you see here, an audio rocker with some "stops" to keep it from rocking.  I can go hours pretty comfortably, and being low to the ground I get the feel of pedals out in front of me like in a race car instead of under me like a truck.  I started out with a snack tray that I'd tie weights to, and while fairly stable, I'd get shin pain from hovering my feet.  This way I get to keep my legs out straight in front of me almost as it was designed!

So, what's YOUR setup like?

I currently use a small "rolling desk" I took from work, basically 3 boards with wheels on 2 of them.  (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif) It is decent since it cost nothing and is fairly stable. I still dream of a real set up like Wiz.

I have the exact same chair Phreak, which isn't used much now. Hmmm.

Also, are you the handsome lad in the top photo?   ^-^

Are those books or vinyls on the shelf?  If they are vinyls, nice collection.

For the kids.  Vinyls are also called records.  Music gets inscribed onto them.  They get played on a turntable.   It is what most of us listened to before the fancy tape decks and CD players were invented.   Now it's kids and there phones, pads, pods.   (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif) (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif)

Vinyl to MP3 is the way to go, you get that quality sound and feeling of vinyl in the convenience of an MP3 file :D.  I have a number of my old records transferred to MP3 / audio CD now.

Why yes Turbo, I got 6 diffrent ones. No donuts   fatnuts  :lolz

Feldynn I have been looking for a program to convert to mp3. there is some music in there I have never heard digital.
One comes to mind, Buck Duram, lead guitar for Blue Oyster Cult, He put out a solo album and I have it.

As most know vinal records are pressed but for the audio file, master cut vinal instead of pressed. Got a few.
In 1980 a record cost me 10 to 12 dollars, master cuts 25 to 30 dollars. Most of them only played once recorded to tape
and put away. Hell a cd is 10 to 20 dollars today so long story short BIG investment in music over the last 40 years.

Except that you probably don't remember 78 RPM records.
They came out BEFORE the LPs (Long Playing - 33-1/3 RPM) and 45's (45 RPM) I once had an original 78 RPM record of Frank Sinatra's first big hit "I'll never smile Again" (He sang it because of me :palm ) in my hands - Un-played, and in the original sleeve.  Problem is, that my greedy little Niece thought it would be worth money and grabbed it out of my hands.....when she did, the record came out of the sleeve and hit the wall, shattering into about 1,000 pieces.  I could have strangled the last breath out of her :o  :nono , But my brother stopped me before she choked - dammit.  It was what you would call, "finding a rare Ferrari in the barn" kind of find, that only comes along once in a lifetime.  Sometimes you just can't find an excuse for kids.  This was one of those times I wish my brother had raised Turnips. Eh, whaddyagonnado? :-\

I have that Tommy Dorsey & Frank Sinatra record (in a WWII "Buy War Bonds" sleeve) framed and hanging on the wall behind me. Ebay: $10 + the frame. It was the first Billboard #1 hit. And a pretty good song. But Jimmy Dorsey was better than Tommy.

I've recently switched to a racing rig built mainly with scrap 2x4's. It's okay for basement furniture.

The other one I built from various scrap wood back in the Prologue days, covered mostly with felt, as per wife's advice. I've used various chairs with it, the best being the office chair on my new rig.

These are great if you're ok with upright seating. I've felt a great improvement since switching to the office chair.

Nice, but just WHEN is enough, enough?  I'm not rainin' on your parade, Doc, but HOLY CHIT! There's a product out there for everyone to buy, ya know?

Lookit, I don't discourage ANYONE from buying one of these (I own an earlier model Obutto myself), but I have everything that the R3volution seat has with the exception of the framing for mounting 3 friggin' HDMI monitors.  Shit, after spending all that money for the seat and the shipping (wt=113 lbs.), ya gotta go out and buy not 1, not 2, but 3 effin' monitors?....wait, I'm not finished....let's throw in 3, yes, Virginia, that's right 3 PS3 slimlines (at the very least) and 3 GT5 game discs. hmmm, let me do the math...$600 for the chair,
                                               $900 for the monitors  :o
                                               $750 for the PS3s  :o
                                               $120 for the GT5 discs  :o
                                              $2370 for the package  :o

And the FUCK er doesn't even have rollers, which weight with the monitors at approx 30 pounds each, comes in at about 200lbs. How ya goin' to move it without rollers? (more money and a trip to Home Depot), heh, heh.  :D

NO thanks (for me), this game has cost enough already (mostly my time and sanity), (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/lol1.gif)

But its nice to have a pipe dream!  On that note, Loretta, pass me the bowl, honey! ^-^ :D ^-^

Fire 'em up! (http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss272/james_mikel/STGT%20forum/lol1.gif)

However, if I had, oh, say $35 -$40 grand to spend, hell, I'd get a seat that had the g-force effects  built in.  Ah, yes, one has only to dream, (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif)   But I DO like your dreams, Doc.  ;D :D

I had to edit the post as I thought it too harsh at first, lol.  But yeah, The base seat is sweet and I just about live in it. 8)  Back in the day, when racing seats and wheels first came out, I dreamed of owning a playseat and a driving force steering wheel.  Now I have an Obutto seat and a G25 wheel.  Speaking from the perspective of evolution, it's not a far reach to want the biggest and best for your racing experience or any experience for that matter. Why, I'll be the first person to admit that I have a Champagne taste and a beer pocketbook, (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif).
