Title: INDYCAR
Post by: Metal on February 25, 2012, 08:11:03 AM
I haven't followed INDYCAR much through the years, but with the new cars, some new engine suppliers, and more balance between road/oval tracks; I am really interested in this upcoming season. Takuma Sato, wow blast from the past! (for F1 fans at least ;) ) Also more issues with the McLaren spec ECU...thought they would have that figured out by now, seeing as they are the ECU supplier for F1

Reminded me of this:

(you only need the first minute) But yeah, there are a limited number of chassis/engines available right now to the IndyCar teams. I'm sure Will Power was well aware that he could not let one burn to the ground. How about some younger track workers??

Very unfortunate about Franchitti's career ending accident, but at least he's alive.  (can discuss that further...) also will be interesting to see how Montoya does back in the single seaters next year.

A link to the latest on the First Indy test on the New Indy road course.  It includes a video of 3 laps around the track.  I kept getting lost while trying to watch it. There has been some big changes compared to what we have in GT5 and 6.

I would certainly like to have a good racing game with the revised track.

Also, the latest word I've read is that bad weather in the area may turn this into a wet race.

Also, also a link to some comments from Montoya who ran the original configuration in F1.

In Indy 500 news:

Hélio Castroneves put the big speed number up Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Fast Friday approaches.

Castroneves' lap of 227.166 mph stands as the best of the month so far, but it doesn't figure to stand long.

“We will keep working,” Castroneves said. “The weather dropped a lot today, but right now the car is handling really well. Certainly the draft counts a lot here and I feel very confident in the Pennzoil No. 3 machine, so right now we will keep going and keep working. I think 229 or 230, it's possible.”

Speeds are up this year.  After qualifying today. The fast 9 were all averaging 230mph over their 4 lap run.

Tomorrow the run for the pole should be good.  ESPN3 (online) has the first half of the day and the second half is on ABC.  I'm not sure of the times.

Next weekend the 500 on ABC.  ;D

Is it just me or does Honda's new aero kit for their teams in Indycar look ridiculous? First time I saw a pic of it I thought it was a joke. I understand these series chase aero development but at some point it is going too far.

Chevy's are not much better.

At an early race this season one of these flimsy bits off a wing came off flew a hundred yards supposedly and hit a fan in the head.

Both makers cars look like there is way too much shit out on those wings in precarious spots waiting to be knocked off. Seems like they have gone too far and that is on top of the stupid looking things they have become.

Or maybe I am just too picky I mean what the hell do I know?
Title: Re: INDYCAR
Post by: dlrws6 on April 21, 2015, 11:51:54 AM
I'm not a fan of the looks either.  Although they seem to look better in motion than in still pictures.  Also Indycar has mad Chevy go back and redesign/eliminate the two vertical elements a/k/a rabbit ears on the ends of the wings due to being too flimsy.  They were removed for Long Beach this past weekend.

To me though its not much different than Formula 1 these days. It seems the general philosophy to generate down force is to add as many little winglets to the bodywork as possible.  Not to mention that underneath these are still the standard Dallara DW12 used the last few years.

They have made a difference. The lap times have dropped (and cautions gone up :() and at Long Beach the announcers even noticed a reduction in marbles produced by the tires slidding.  With no evidence of a compound change since last year.

If there is any good news out of it, is that when they get to the ovals they should look a lot different.

I think they pretty well accept that these cars going backwards is a bad thing.  I think the question may be why have the cars become so unstable that some of their best drivers can't keep them going in the right direction.

Another one happened today and Indycar is not rushing out changes to stabilize the cars.  So far despite a few good races, this has been a really sucky year for the rule makers in Indycar.  I hope they get the act together soon. The last thing they need is an epic blunder on their biggest stage.

Another one.  This time its Honda.

I don't think Tony George has anything to do with it now.  I think it may have something to do with the current guy Miles something or another.

Although I'd say its still fair to blame Tony George.  He is after all the one who screwed things up back in the 90s and got the series to the point it is now.

The thing is, the first accidents were with qualifying trim so you could think that race trim would be better, but presumably this last accident was in race trim and I'm sure that the aero will perform even worse in a pack of cars.

It reminds me of the first Tuna cup at the Indy track.  I used a low downforce setup that allowed me to out qualify everyone except for Ucan in his crazy S2000 but it just wasn't stable on track with a bunch of other cars.

I'm sure I'll watch live.  I've tried to every year for the last 20 years.  I just hope its a safe race.

The situation reminds me of LeMans back in 1999 or 2000 with the Mercedes GT1.  Every one new the car was unstable, with one or two flips in practice. Not to mention the car looked unsettled every time it went down the Mulsane. Come race day the next thing you know the car is in the air, through the trees and left sitting in some one's garden.

There is just no room for that at Indy. Car in the air could equal major disaster, and not just for the driver.  :(

BREAKING: IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson Dead At 37

The Associated Press reports that IndyCar driver Justin Wilson succumbed to a head injury sustained in a wreck Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Wilson was 37.

IndyCar made an announcement this evening at about 9:10 p.m. EDT at the request of Justin Wilson’s family. Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, the parent company of IndyCar, said he will remember Wilson as “one of the most well respected, highly regarded, and loved people in the entire paddock.”

Driver and team owner Ed Carpenter also paid his respects during the announcement, describing Wilson as “a great professional driver and extremely good at his craft” and “a friend among everyone in the paddock.”

Wilson died at Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital in the company of his family. Following IndyCar’s announcement, the family released this statement:

With deep sadness, the parents of Justin Wilson, Keith and Lynne, his wife Julia, and his brother Stefan share the news that Justin passed away today after succumbing to injuries suffered during the Verizon IndyCar event at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, August 23.

Justin was a loving father and devoted husband, as well as a highly competitive racing driver who was respected by his peers.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital, Pocono Raceway, Andretti Autosport, and the Verizon IndyCar Series as well as the entire racing community for the amazing outpouring of support from fans around the world.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wilson Children’s Fund care of INDYCAR.

This upcoming weekend (May 21, 22) is qualifying for the Indy 500.

Although ABC is only broadcasting the last hour on each day, ESPN3 which is online only will cover qualifying all day long on Saturday and Sunday.

If you don't have access to ESPN3 you might be able to listen to it via Indycar radio with live timing and scoring found here.  http://racecontrol.indycar.com/

The Indycar App may work as well but I have not tried it yet.

Here also is a link to an article about rules changes for this year plus other info including the entry list.
