Title: Bulls vs Horses - Italian Supercar Series - Mondays @ 930PM EST - Race #4 10/6
Post by: Wolfpack987 on July 28, 2014, 02:55:46 PM
Time to show some love to the supercars of our youth! (well, some of us at least).  Posters of several of these cars lined my bedroom walls as a child, and I doubt I was the only one.  Heck, some of these currently adorn the walls of my garage :D

It's time to pick a side.  Are you team Lamborghini?  Or team Ferrari?  In this unique series you will be driving 2 cars from the manufacturer of your choosing. The series will consist of 6 races, and each car must be driven 3 times.  Additionally, in each race you must make a tire compound change.  Furthermore, the tire compound requirements will vary between the two "divisions" of cars.  In another twist, each of the slower division cars must remain 100% stock.  And finally, for the faster division cars suspension and transmission tuning is allowed.

THE CARS:

It will be a Wednesday series, with the same time of night (930) as I usually hold it.  I would like to start the series around the end of August / beginning of September.

I very well may stick to that day Dude, but I'd like to gauge interest in holding this on Mondays.

Also pick a number when you get a chance  :P

Mondays would be fine too. My number is always 42.  :)

Also, did you ever find a nice posted tune for the F40 as a starting point?

If this lands on mondays, I'm in for #3 Lambo's.  If wednesday I'll have to pass on the series unfortunately.

Here is an F40 tune that I'm pretty fond of.  It's a tune by Ridox2JZGTE, from over on www.gtplant.net (http://www.gtplant.net).  He claims this tune adheres to the real life specifications for the F40 as sold in the US market.

Suspension
ride height:  101 - 101
spring rate:  8.25 - 12.00
dampers C:  7 - 6
dampers E:  7 - 5
anti-roll bars:  4 - 4
camber:  0.5 - 1.8  (both values negative)
toe angle:  0.33 - 0.33  (both values positive)

transmission
set default
set FD to 4.000
set auto max speed to lowest setting, 137
adjust each gear:
1st - 3.692
2nd - 2.285
3rd - 1.636
4th - 1.284
5th - 0.978
Final Drive - 2.900

limited slip differential
initial torque - 30
accel - 36
decel - 36

Link to tune:  http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/difficult-car-ferrari-f40.310621/ (http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/difficult-car-ferrari-f40.310621/)  (this tune is the 2nd post)

I only used this tune as a basis for my own tuning.  The LSD settings above are a bit ridiculous and not beneficial.

Wolf, is 1460kg correct for the Diablo GT, it's 1490 stock.

Post by: Wolfpack987 on August 05, 2014, 07:24:11 AM
You are correct Pete.  I'll fix that.  Looks like the online resource I used for vehicle weight (at the time of posting) has incorrect data.  Also, a bit coincidental that both Lambos weigh the same.

A comment on the F40 tune I posted:  It's really just a good starting point.  It handles better than stock with that tune, but further adjustments are needed to increase stability, especially in low speed turns.  I opened up the LSD under decel (from 33 to 10) and softened up the rear suspension a bit to add grip.

You are correct Pete.  I'll fix that.  Geez, just start calling me Captain Tyop ;D

This mean you're interested?

Good possibility.

To sum up the cars (and this is somewhat obvious from the PP ratings):

The 288 GTO is clearly faster than the Countach.  And the Diablo is clearly faster than the F40.  Thus strategy will be required to determine when to use each car to your advantage when you think you can place the highest.  This should make things very interesting, and is all part of the plan here.

NOTICE!!!

TIRE and FUEL usage will be set to FAST, not VERY FAST.

It was just way too quick with these high powered vehicles.

Race 1 results!

Monza 80s
1 - badaboya1 - Diablo GT
2 - Wolfpack987 - F40
3 - DudeTuna - F40
4 - TunaPhreak - Diablo GT

Turnout for race #1 could have been greater, but a few timing conflicts arose at the last moment.  Hopefully going forward we can field a larger crew.  The Diablo was certainly the car to beat a Monza, with the F40s standing little chance.  With superior tire wear and fuel efficiency on their side it may have been possible for an F40 to challenge for the lead, given a flawless driving performance.  But alas, the term "taming the beast" is certainly appropriate for driving cars of this ilk and it was not to be.

Congratulations to badaboya for the win, as well as for taking pole position.  Silverstone GP is next! :)

I had too many unforced errors. I think the tequila may have caught up with me just a bit. The tires were still showing good at 9's and 8's, but it seemed to lose a lot more rear grip then it had at the start.

Next stop 9/22 - Willow Springs International Raceway - Big Willow - 50 minutes. Willow is not on my favorite track list, but I'm still looking forward to it.  :)

Just to clarify, allow me to clearly state that you CAN modify the LSD for the Diablo and F40.  There was some confusion about that.

Next race is tonight, Big Willow!

Looks like the "core 4" is the best we're gonna do for this series :(

Regardless, everyone is having fun!  (I think?   (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif) )

Big Willow gave most of us fits last night but it did make for some closer than expected racing at times.  Badaboya1 gets the award for cleanest drive...by far.  But due to the performance of his Countach that was only good enough for 2nd place.  Here are the full results:

Race #3 - Willow Springs Raceway - Big Willow
1 - Wolfpack987 - F40 - 37 laps - 51:01.894
2 - badaboya1 - Countach         -   +26.677
3 - DudeTuna - 288 GTO           -      2 laps
4 - TunaPhreak - Diablo GT        -      2 laps

Next race will be held in 2 weeks, at Apricot Hill.  If anyone wants to get together and practice in the meantime holler at me dog! :laugh

Sorry you couldn't make it soks, but I appreciate the heads up.  I hope you can make the last two races...and honestly drive any of the pre-selected cars that you want.

Another race in the books, with one of the closest finishes to date as well.  It was a tight one, but in the end the brawn and speed of the Diablo GT wasn't enough to overcome the handling and litheness of the 288 GTO.  Sadly, we had our first (and hopefully only) disco of the series.  Sorry Tuna  :(  Results posted below:

Race #4 - Apricot Hill - Results
1) Wolfpack987 - 288 GTO - 28 laps - 40:07.417
2) badaboya1  - Diablo GT -                  +04.961
3) DudeTuna  - 288 GTO -                    +57.936
4) Mondo_Tuna - 25th Anni Countach     3 laps
5) TunaPhreak - 25th Anni Countach        DNF

props to Mondo_Tuna for showing up with a car that he had driven a grand total of 1 mile before the race (http://i.imgur.com/LmjyBgx.gif)

Race #5 at Mt. Panorama may have been our most challenging race to date.  A difficult track and...some night time driving.  Sorry about that folks, I hadn't changed the time interval settings after our shorter 40 minute races.  I hope that didn't hamper anyone's driving efforts.  Nosoks amazed us all in his late season (lol) debut.  He quickly showed the rest of us the door with his blazingly fast Diablo GT.  Results below:

Race #5 - Mt. Panorama
1 - nosoks - Diablo GT - 52:16.732 - 23 laps
2 - Wolfpack987 - F40   +1:04.055
3 - DudeTuna - F40       +2:17.647
4 - badaboya1 - Countach  + 1 lap
5 - MondoTuna - Countach +  1 lap
6 - TunaPhreak - Countach  - DNF  :(

Finale is next week at Spa!!!

A very big THANK YOU to all that participated.  I really enjoyed driving these cars and I hope everyone else did as well!  It certainly was a challenge to wrangle some of these cars but by the end I think everyone figured them out...except maybe Dude ;D

I hope we can do another series soon with a higher participation rate!
