New Tuna races possibly
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:21:48 PM »

I am preparing some recon races for a potential regular event. I am hoping that these can become a regular sanctioned tuna event. These races are not going to be as regular as you are accustomed but they will have regularity in their own right. What I am preparing right now are celebratory races based on big names in the automotive and racing industries. Right now I have two races planned out and ready to be announced and more will come as my research continues. These races will have a set date with no rain dates, meaning if something is a miss like a network failure there will be no rescheduling for the event.

Right now I am uncertain as to if it's worth the effort to come up with a full 52 race schedule (One a week) so I may end up working a 12 race schedule (One a month). The level of participation in the recon races will determine the number of races I come up with for this. Should we decide that these races do become a "Regular Tuna Event" they will be annual and the schedule will simply rotate back to the beginning with the new year with little to no change to the individual events.

So far based on a 12 race schedual, I am thinking:

Michael Schumacher - January 3 - Ferrari formula 1 for 91 laps at Monaco (1 lap for every carreer win)
Enzo Ferrari - February 18 - Ferrari Enzo for 114 laps at Rome (1 lap for every year since his birth)
Nicola Larini - March 19 - Alfa Romeo 155 2.5 V6 TI '93 for Laps and track TBD
Dale Earnhardt - April 29 - Buick GNX for 76 at Daytona Super Speedway (1 lap for every carreer win)
Tony Stewart - May 20 - 2010 Tony Stewart #14 IMPALA for 54 laps at Indianapolis (1 lap for every carreer win)
Tsugio Matsuda - June 18 - Calsonic Impul GTR '08 for 32 laps at Suzuka (1 lap for every year since his birth)
Richard Petty - July 2 - Plymouth Superbird for 200 laps at Daytona Super Speedway (1 lap for every carreer win)
Jackie Oliver - August 14 - Ford GT-40 for 69 laps at Sarth (1 lap for every year since his birth)
Ron Fellows - September 28 - Corvette ZR-1 RM for 52 laps at Laguna Seca (1 lap for every year since his birth)
Peter Dumbreck - October 13 - Mercedes CLK Touring car for 37 laps at Nurbergring GP/D (1 lap for every year since his birth)
Markko Märtin - November 10 - Ford Focus Rally Car '99 for 18 laps at various dirt tracks (1 Lap for every carreer Podium)
Manabu Orido - December 3 - Wedsoport IS350 '08 for 44 laps at Fuji (1 lap for every year since his birth)

For the record, I do think that 52 endurance races a year might be a little much, but for the sake of being theurough I'm going to go a head and put up slots for a 52 week season. (Largely due to a bunch of the people I look at overlapping but still.....)

What type of races?  (rally, snow, tarmac)

It will vary, the two recon races I just posted are both from Nascar so it's tarmac, but not all will be from Nascar so it'll change appropriately. Richard Petty's Birthday...Super bird at Daytona, Tommy Makinin... Lancer Evos on dirt, Enzo Ferrari ...Ferraris at Rome, that kind of thing.

Racing for points or FUN?

Racing for the sole purpose of racing, no points involved.

March = Danica Patrick??

You know Arton Senna and Cale Yarborough were both born in march. Hell I would rather race in honor of Speed Racer than Danica.

There is also the element of having cars appropriate to the drivers within the game, it was for that reason I steered clear of both Cale Yarborough and Arton Senna. Arton Senna drove most notably for McLaren F1 and Yarborough for various makes. Asside from the Olds none of them have acceptable body doubles.

Your position on racing for the march race did not escape me during my preliminalry research as I assume you are not alone with that position, I had a backup driver just incase. Nicola Larini was also born in march, he was the one who made the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI famous.

I will take a look through that site you linked, looks like it could be useful.

*EDIT*

I was also thinking about Ettore Bugatti for September...but 130 laps at Sarth seems....inappropriate.

I also wanted to to do something for Alois Ruf Sr. but I can not seem to find his birthday.

Though I agree with your points.  (I grew up watching Cale race on Wild World of Sports on Saturday afternoons.  He's an ICON.) We also have an obligation to be equal opportunity.

If you look at the stats for the site, we have a 15:1 male to female ratio (and it is only counting the ones who indicated on their profile...  I propose that for Cobra Girl and maybe even the Amish dentist; we celebrate our Tuna gender diversity by celebrating Danica Patrick -- or even Janet Guthrie.  (probably get better pics posted with Danica, though Janet is cooler)   I think we should celebrate at least one female with the series...

I plan to be around a while, maybe the next March we celebrate CY and A...

IMHO YMMV

Judith: (on Stan's desire to be a mother) Here! I've got an idea: Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb - which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans' - but that he can have the *right* to have babies.

Francis: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother... sister, sorry.

Reg: What's the *point*?

Francis: What?

Reg: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies, when he can't have babies?

Francis: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.

Reg: It's symbolic of his struggle against reality.

Personally I like Danica, She is hot and drives a race car....Epic win in my book. However, She like Dale Earnhardt has a sizable anti-fanbase, it was for that reason I had a backup handy. May not have been ready but handy none the less, Still a year to figure out the details so we'll see where it goes. I may even go back to Danica if it seems appropriate, but then again I would like to try to restrict the Nascar events a little bit. I noticed Tony Stewarts birthday with the link Sniper provided and Tony's seems more appropriate given Tony's actual car is in the game, ironically the track and car manufacturer are the same giving me another justification to pull Danica down infavor of the backup from the old DTM.

If you need a back-up for january,
Jacky Ickx, born of the first of january in Brussels.
His best remembered race was the 24h of Le Mans of '69 in a Gulf livery Ford GT40. A Legendary Le Mans race where Ickx started last intentionally and still managed to finish first, although his Ford GT40 was outperformed by the newer Porsches and Ferrari's.
During the last hour of that race, Ickx in his GT40 and Hans Hermann in a Porsche 908 overtook eachother several times, as the newer Porsche had less drag and thus better speed on the straights, but had to brake sooner due to worn out brake pads.
They finished with just 110 metres margin.

If you ask me, this would be an even better race than Schumacher. Schumi never drove either of the Formula one cars, just the predecessors of them. The GT40 that Ickx drove IS in GT5 and is a prize car for the B-spec indy500 so almost everyone has is in their garage.

Just an idea of course. I figured it was worth mentioning.

Yes, worth mentioning indeed. To be honest with you, Schumacher was one of the first three people on my list to add (First two being Earnhardt and Petty). This was largely due to the fact I did follow him for a wile, I'm not going to lie and say I was all up and up with F1 muchless Ferrari F1, but when I did manage to catch a race it was Schumacher and Barrichello that I watched, I even saw the 2002 Austria race, I lost a lot of respect for Ferrari there, but I digress.

Where was I, Oh yeah, Schumacher is one I definately want. You do make a very valid point with Ickx, the GT-40 in the game was the car he drove. With a little further research I see his co-driver from that season was born in August. His ten year carrer did not yield spactacular numbers but that could actually be a good thing.

Would Ickx's co-driver's birthday be an acceptable compromize? This would give us...say...51 laps in the GT-40 at Sarth on August 14.

I had originally considered the GT-40 for Henry Fords birthday, but Ford's birthday falls in the same month at Petty's and was dropped due to that. Since then I have been wanting to figure out a way to get a Sarth race as well as a GT-40 race, this would be two birds one stone and one of the more appropriate exicutions of the idea.

Just another thought, I don't get the feeling that many people here enjoy driving the Formula 1 cars.  I'd like a chance to race them but I don't think many share that view.

I understand that view completely, That is why there is only the one F1 race. I did not want to overdo it with the F1's but at the same time I do want a chance to run them. Even if it does come up to the 52 race sequence there would only be one F1 race or I would atleast try to keep it at one. Should we decide this to become a full fledged tuna event, once a year is not too much to ask for I feel.

Well, no need for compromise since it wasn't a demand. Merely a suggestion.
But after all, it comes to the same thing: GT40's at La Sarthe. So there's no reason not to agree.

51 is the amount of wins Jackie Oliver had in his F1 career. In Le Mans, he only participated three times. Perhaps it's more suitable to pick his age? (69)
