SIGGRAPH 2014
« on: August 12, 2014, 07:10:42 PM »

So I found out last minute that SIGGRAPH 2014 is here in Vancouver.  I booked off work a little early today and headed down.  I only paid to get access to the exhibitions rather than the full conference.  For those who don't know (including me), SIGGRAPH is a big computer graphics conference, everything from video games to movies.  The exhibitions were full of companies doing mocap, VR stuff, 3D graphics, animation, 3D printing, there were universities, other provinces, and even Mexico.  I had a really good talks with a few companies doing mocap.  A guy from Bungie was discussing mocap with one of the companies I was talking to.

Oculus was there but I didn't wait in their line since I already have a DK2.  I did get to try Sony's Morpheus today. My initial impression was that the resolution of the Morpheus was better than DK2 and that the screen door and pixels were harder to distinguish. I think the FOV was less. The high persistence killed it though. I almost think that it was worse than DK1.  Sony's got some work to do but a good first attempt.

I got to try the DK2 with the STEM motion controller system with a lightsaber demo.  It was fucking incredible.  The most amazing VR experience that I have had.  The arm tracking was great.
