Will it never end? Just when I thought we were going to catch a break they are predicting a couple of the hottest days of the year here. The afternoons are brutal here.

The devil wanted a place on earth
Sort of a summer home
A place to spend his vacation
Whenever he wanted to roam.
So he picked out Texas
A place both wretched and rough
Where the climate was to his liking
And the cowboys hardened and tough.

He dried up the streams in the canyons
And ordered no rain to fall
He dried up the lakes in the valleys
Then baked and scorched it all.
Then over his barren country
He transplanted shrubs from hell.
The cactus, thistle and prickly pear
The climate suited them well.

Now the home was much to his liking
But animal life, he had none.
So he created crawling creatures
That all mankind would shun.
First he made the rattlesnake
With it's forked poisonous tongue.
Taught it to strike and rattle
And how to swallow it's young.

Then he made scorpions and lizards
And the ugly old horned toad.
He placed spiders of every description
Under rocks by the side of the road.
Then he ordered the sun to shine hotter,
Hotter and hotter still.
Until even the cactus wilted
And the old horned lizard took ill.

Then he gazed on his earthly kingdom
As any creator would
He chuckled a little up his sleeve
And admitted that it was good.
'Twas summer now and Satan lay
By a prickly pear to rest.
The sweat rolled off his swarthy brow
So he took off his coat and vest.

"By Golly," he finally panted,
"I did my job too well,
I'm going back to where I came from,
Texas is hotter than Hell."

This Texas sounds a lot Arizona in the winter.

I really can't put living in the southern states into perspective other than to say that I really feel for you guys. Really.

Continuously oppressive heat and humidity surely has to take its toll, in the long run. We get a few weeks of it here, depending on the year (about 3 days, so far, this year). Sure, there is air conditioning, but getting it month after month? No thanks.

On the other hand, last year in Las Vegas, we had unusually warm weather for the beginning of November. Nobody had any problem walking around in T-shirts all week (apparently that isn't always the case, but what do I know?). I can take that any day compared to what they must be getting now.

To be honest, it's not bad at all, at least here in AZ. We have a couple of months in the summer that are hot and humid, but during those months we also get monsoons and haboobs to keep things interesting. The rest of the year it's effin great. Low humidity, 70s in the winter, and an occasional cold front that moves in to drop the temps to freezing. Shorts and t-shirts for me most of the year.

Vegas is just about the same as here.

From Wikipedia:

"A haboob (Arabic:"هَبوب", "strong wind") is a type of intense duststorm commonly observed in arid regions throughout the world."

(I didn't know either.) :)

It just rained like crazy for about five minutes, then the humidity went through the roof.

We needed the rain, though.

Apparently, this storm was in the news here all day, but I didn't hear about it until late. (On the street, I overheard someone calling everyone in her address book being a good Samaritan, saving their lives, or something. By the sound of her, she must have thought the third coming or the Rapture was here. ::) )

Where I am (south of the centre cross), it wasn't too bad, but 4 tornadoes touched down south of London, where the heavy red is above the bottom-left. Trenton is near the red on the right and they must have got hit by some of it, too.

I haven't made an animated GIF in a few years, but it looked like it would be a hassle to overlay the road lines and place names, but it worked.
